You will be amazed at just how quickly and easily our kit allows you to remove a variety of scratches, stains, and rust from your new Stainless steel appliance, sink, or grill. Let’s learn more about this remarkable tool.
How do scratches occur?
It is beneficial to understand how a grain is created on Stainless steel. Flat surfaces are etched by large surfacing drums or wheels of varying grit texture to create what the industry refers to as #3 or #4 finishes, which are common on sinks and appliances. Stainless steel is recognized as a strong and durable material, yet the finishing process renders its appearance quite fragile.
When foreign objects are scraped over this surface, the result can be a cross-grain pattern, which appears as a scratch. In some cases, this scratch can be nothing more than a superficial blemish. Sometimes, however, the damage may be a deep gouge. Removal of these and other types of scratches requires re-aligning the unwanted cross-grain pattern to the original grain pattern.
How does Scratch-B-Gone™ actually work?
The Stainless Steel Scratch-B-Gone™ tool works to realign any unwanted cross-grain scratch back to its desired original direction, recreating the manufacturer's grain imprint. Your kit comes with everything you need to remove even the most challenging scratches. The required effort will vary according to the degree of damage to the surface and grain. You can also use the Stainless Steel Scratch-B-Gone™ tool to remove rust, stains and water spots.
NOTE:Scratch-B-Gone™ will NOT remove dents or dings in the metal.
Can I use the Scratch-B-Gone™ on all of my kitchen appliances?
Stainless Steel Scratch-B-Gone™ is safe for all brushed ‘real’ Stainless steel surfaces. However, it is important to note, that some manufacturers may apply a clear coat protective finish to the doors, trim pieces and handles to reduce tarnishing or discoloration. Some manufacturers use the following phrases to identify the clear coated appliances: Easy Care, Smudge Free, Satina, Clean Steel, Titanium and others. Before refinishing your appliance, please be sure to check with the manufacturer to find out if a protective coating or synthetic finish has been applied to the surface you are planning to refinish.
Which abrasive pad do I use?
You will find four different abrasives in your kit. Each has a specific use and function.
- The grey pad is designed for light scuffs, stains, rust as well as final finishing of restored surfaces. This abrasive pad should be the first choice to remove the light scuffs, which may be the result of using the green scouring pads, on large flat surfaces of refrigerator doors and hood panels.
- The brown pad is used to remediate light to medium scratches on fine, tight grain finishes.
- The burgundy pad is designed to remediate medium scratches on course grain finishes.
- The coarse abrasive, 1” x 6” strip is used to remediate deep scratches.
How do I refinish my appliance, grill or sink?
Step 1 : Identify the existing grain direction of the surface to be restored. If you are refinishing an area that is close to an intersecting grain, tape off this area to protect from accidental scratching by the Stainless Scratch-B-Gone™ tool. Identify the scratches, repair all deep scratches first.
Step 2 :
- For light scuffs, scratches, stains, and rust use the grey pad. Attach the pad to the grip handle by lifting the clip levers and inserting the ear tabs of the pads under the clip jaws. Close clip by pushing lever to flat position. For best results, the pad should be stretched tight. To apply the ULTRA SHINE™ liquid, puncture the spout on the bottle with a safety pin or a paper clip ( do not cut the spout). Apply a small amount of ULTRA SHINE™ in an ‘S’ pattern to the face of the pad, spreading it over the surface with your finger. Keep just enough ULTRA SHINE™ on the pad to maintain cutting effectiveness. Following the existing grain pattern, slide the pad forward and back repeatedly until surface is restored. Start with light pressure, increase the pressure as needed until evidence of the scratch has disappeared.
- For stubborn areas or resistant scratches on a fine, tight grain surface use the brown pad with a small amount of ULTRA SHINE™.
- For medium scratcheson coarse grain surface, use the burgundy pad with a small amount of ULTRA SHINE™. (d) For deep scratch removal, wrap the coarse, 1” x 6”, Aluminum Oxide abrasive strip over the tip of your index finger. Following surface grain, dry rub the deep scratch with even pressure. Once the deep scratch has disappeared, repeat Step 2(a). Wipe off surface with micro-fiber cloth to expose work area. Repeat process until all signs of the scratch are removed. Once you are satisfied the scratch is removed, follow Step 3 below for final surface blending.
Step 3 : SURFACE BLENDING - Proper blending of the reconditioned metal with the original metal is crucial to a satisfactory final result. Using the grey pad as in Step 2(a) procedure, gradually increase the treatment area until it is approximately three times the original scratch surface.
IMPORTANT: It is very important to keep the movement of the abrasive pad following in the same direction as the original grain. Apply with even, light pressure in the same direction. Movement across the grain pattern will result in additional scratch marks on your Stainless steel surface. If this occurs, simply repeat steps above.
Do not use abrasive pads over manufacturer-applied clear coats, synthetic or simulated finishes, painted letters and numbers, decals, or insignias, as this will damage all of these areas. If you have any questions about how to determine if your appliance has a clear coat, please review out 3-Step Guide to help you make that determination.
